I really enjoyed the Innocents at War series, but was unhappy with the abrupt and sad way it ended. This new series picks up 20 years later on the eve of WWII. Now the focus is on Tommy’s son Thomas, also a pilot. We also see Tommy again and find what happened to him after the Great War. Excellent story in the usual Wareham style. I look forward to another great series.
Am definitly loving the return to this storyline, a follow-up to Innocents at War. As well should praise the edits and epilogue to the previous series(not editing my previous reviews for those as they stand for when I read them). Very much looking forward to Wareham adding more to this series, his work in keeping historical accuracy, realism, and fictional charachters balanced has kept me coming back to many of his works time and again; thus far Innocent No More is off to a good start for me, can't wait for the story to get to WWII proper, especially with all the advancements of the time for him to work with. I was pretty intent on the action, and I personally find it just as well written (when it does occur, not to much happening yet as this is setting up a new series) at nearly 250mph monoplanes, as it was when he wrote 80mph biplanesMore to say, but I'll wait for more entries to expand the scope of my review
Unique about Wareham is his unapologetic devotion to historical exposition and accuracy--much appreciated and enjoyed by this reader of what looks to be all of his historical series. The exposition is done lightly and dovetails nicely with the more traditional romance, violence, and plot complications. Worthy to sit on the shelf next to Cornwell, Forester, O'Brien.
His descriptions of English society in the read about which he writes make his stories come to life. As WWII began, too many in the higher echelons of command were still stuck on social forms rather than the business of fighting. Worse were the ones who believed that making common cause with Germany was better than fighting fascism. In this book is a glance at that chaotic start to a horrendous conflict.
Another excellent novel with strong characters. This is a sequel to the Innocents at War series, which concerned the RFC in WWI. The son of the main character of that series is now to join the RAF and his father returns from Australia to join as well. Several characters from that series reappear and it is a good story.
